Sewing Seeds into South Dunedin
TEAM ATTENDS LIGHTHOUSE WEEKEND
At the end of August, Linda, Alice, and Julie from The Seedling South Dunedin attended “The Lighthouse,” an event for mission innovators in Auckland, facilitated by the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership. Participants from all around the country attended, with each team invited to present a missional idea from their context. The team from The Seedling gave a presentation on the sewing group that they’ve recently begun. They found the input at The Lighthouse extremely helpful in understanding the situation and ways to develop this sewing group (or any other proposed projects in the future). The enthusiasm and encouragement of the leadership, and other people attending the weekend, was inspiring.
The Seedling began in early 2018, and started exploring the idea of a sewing group later that year, as one way of building relationships in the South Dunedin community. The sewing group began meeting regularly in May this year, and has been gathering since then on three Saturday afternoons each month. The PSO Shop On Carroll store has kindly donated fabric, and a notice to Presbyterian churches in Dunedin resulted in many generous donations of sewing machines (thank you!).
Linda comments that "We are enjoying sharing our sewing skills with others and seeing the pleasure they get from creating clothes for themselves and family. The additional sewing machines have added to the number available for classes and meant the ladies can borrow a machine to sew at home. Our hope is that some of them will eventually feel confident to assist with teaching others how to sew."
The Seedling is an initiative of the Southern Presbytery, Presbyterian Support Otago, and the Knox Centre of Ministry and Leadership.
