Pulpit Radical
A biography of the influential Dunedin Presbyterian minister Rutherford Waddell – Pulpit Radical: The Story of New Zealand Social Campaigner Rutherford Waddell – has just been published.
From his base as a minister at the former St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Dunedin, Rutherford
Waddell immersed himself in all manner of causes, notably in campaigning against the miserable
plight of women in the clothing industry, which sparked major changes to industrial legislation. His
many other achievements included pioneering the Presbyterian deaconess movement in New
Zealand, and individual parishes supporting their own overseas missionaries.
The book is written by Dunedin journalist and historian Ian Dougherty, whose previous 25 non-fiction books include the co-authored Making A Difference: A Centennial History of Presbyterian Support Otago 1906-2006.
Pulpit Radical comprises 296 pages, including 100 colour and black and white illustrations.
Copies are available from bookshops, or directly from the publisher, Saddle Hill Press, PO Box 90, Dunedin 9054, Email saddlehillpress@xtra.co.nz for $49 post free.
