From Darkness to Light: A conversation about the Abuse in Care Report prior to the Government’s National Apology

Format: On Friday evening (8 November), we will watch the critically acclaimed movie Spotlight (2015), which tells the story of an investigative journalist unit’s investigation into a decades-long coverup of widespread and
systemic sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, in the United States.
On Saturday morning (9 November), we will reflect on the movie and make connections with the Royal Commission of Inquiry’s recently released report on abuse in care in Aotearoa New Zealand: Whanaketia – Through pain and trauma, from darkness to light.
On Tuesday 12 November, a public apology event will be held at Parliament, where the Prime Minister will formally apologise to survivors of abuse in care.
Facilitator: David Tombs is the Howard Paterson Professor of Theology and Public Issues at the University of Otago. He has authored several pieces of work on church responses to spiritual and sexual abuses.
